Amy,
I totally agree. Especially the part about individual differences. Thank you for your thoughtful comment.

There are other things to consider. Like it or not, we live in a highly industrialized society that spews out toxins, depletes our soil of nutriets, and stresses our bodies beyond what they were ever meant to endure in a natural environment. Protein deficiency CAN happen. In an ideal society where are bodies were harmonious with nature and efficiently regulating nutrients, probably not, but that is not the case with us. An imbalance in the body caused by something unseen in the environment can cause the body to not absorb or process proteins efficiently. Perhaps a raw diet may work best for one person, but it might be quite wrong for another. For example, I do not do well on a raw diet. My body simply does not respond the way that it seemed to for others. I felt like the foods were not all being used in a natural way. Using a lot of nuts and seeds is encouraged in many raw diets, and I do not believe that the body was meant to consume such a large amount of them, just as I don't believe we were meant to consume high amounts of fruit juice. It simply did not feel right. On the other hand, when I followed the Tao of Beauty and incorportated a yin/yang diet that helped to rid my body of excess yin through incorporating more yang foods and stir-frying, my body felt amazing and the pounds melted away without effort.

I would be very careful to ignore the words of doctors. Certainly there are holistic practitioners that may help better, especially in terms of a natural lifestyle, but ignoring a doctor can reap serious consequences. Certainly seek other advice. I would not only listen to a doctor because most of them don't consider alternative treatments, but ignoring them could also lead to more serious issues or even cost you your life.

Also keep in mind that some foods actually have more vitamins and minerals AFTER they are cooked, such as carrots. God never intended us to eat a completely raw diet. A diet high in raw foods, yes, but never completely raw. Take a look at the ancient jews. All of the societies around them were full of disease from eating bad foods, especially those consuming foods with everything beneficial removed from them, but the jews ate cheese and meat (no pork or shellfish, which are basically the animals that eat refuse) and bread and grains and they were the healthiest people around, relatively free from the diseases plaguing the other peoples around them.

You have to do what is right for your body. We all have different needs based on genetics and environment. Don't just listen to one person because it worked for them.

I also find an awareness of spirituality gives me more mindfulness to eating. I naturally crave healthier foods.
